Founded by :- Robert Wood Johnson I, James Wood Johnson and Edward Mead Johnson.

Johnson & Johnson is an American multinational pharmaceutical, consumer packaged goods and medical devices manufacturing company established in 1886. In the 2018 Fortune 500 list based on the United States corporations by total revenue, the company was placed No. 37.

Its common stock is a part of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, a stock market indicator that values companies based in the United States. The consumer division of Johnson & Johnson is located in Skillman, New Jersey and is headquarters are situated in New Brunswick, New Jersey. 

 

How It All Started 

Motivated from a speech by Joseph Lister an antiseptic advocate, Robert Wood Johnson with his brothers James Wood Johnson and Edward Mead Johnson created a line of surgical dressings which are ready-to-use in year 1885.

In 1886 the company produced its first line product. The products were already featured by a logo resembling the sign of James Wood Johnson, very equivalent to the logo used currently. It is one of the oldest and longest-used company logos across the world.

The first president of the company was Robert Wood Johnson. He improved the overall sanitation practices in that century, and lent his name to the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He was succeeded by his brother James Wood Johnson in the presidency until 1932, after his death in 1910.Then after death of James Wood Johnson his son, Robert Wood Johnson II succeeded in presidency.

The first baby to appear on a Johnson & Johnson baby powder label was Robert Wood Johnson’s granddaughter, Mary Lea Johnson Richards. His great-grandson, Jamie Johnson, made a documentary called Born Rich about the experience of growing up as the heir to one of the world’s greatest fortunes.

Johnson & Johnson products are sold in over 175 countries; and the corporation includes about 250 subsidiary companies with operations in around 60 countries. Johnson & Johnson’s brands include numerous household names of first aid supplies and medications. Among its well-known consumer products are the Band-Aid Brand line of bandages, Johnson’s baby, Tylenol medications, Clean & Clear facial wash, Neutrogena skin and beauty products, and Acuvue contact lenses.
